Many people may not realize how much financial stress can negatively affect their day-to-day lives. Sound financial fitness can help keep workers healthy and productive just as stress from financial instability can put a strain on health and productivity and lead to increased worker absences. That’s why the County of San Diego and its partners are teaming up to provide residents with the information they need to become more financially aware. This coming January, the San Diego County Library is excited to launch a Financial Wellness Wednesdays series in partnership with San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) and the County of San Diego’s Aging and Independence Services (AIS). This series will bring a host of financial literacy workshops to library branches throughout the county.
“A core part of our mission at the County Library is to give community members the tools that they need to build the best lives possible,” said Library Director José Aponte. “These financial literacy workshops do exactly that.”
Financial literacy programs can help people develop positive personal finance habits that lead to better financial decisions. Learning the basics of budgeting, credit, and money are important skills for creating a healthy, safe and thriving life. Workshop topics will help residents become more financially literate and include: Understanding Credit Reports; Preventing Identity Theft & Scams; Building a Better Budget; Rebuilding After a Financial Crisis; Repaying Student Loans; and Teens & Money.
Classes are taught by SDCCU representatives from throughout the San Diego region and are based on a robust curriculum developed by SDCCU. George Chamberlin will be kicking off the 3 month series at a special event taking place at the San Marcos Library on Wednesday, January 27th at 6 pm.
Providing lifelong learning opportunities is important to the library so classes are open to adults of all ages. Financial Literacy is one way the Library can provide resources to empower our communities to thrive.
