First 5 San Diego and Vons Expand Partnership to Include Live Well San Diego

It can be difficult for children to make healthy food choices when their environments in their home or community offer and promote limited access to healthy affordable foods and practice poor eating habits.  In 2013, First 5 San Diego and Vons collaborated to reach thousands of San Diego County residents with healthy eating messages and promotions in stores and online, in an effort to make the healthy choice the easy choice and to teach healthy eating habits that can easily be adopted at home.

On March 18, 2014, First 5 San Diego and Vons announced their efforts to go deeper into the community by partnering with the County of San Diego’s Live Well San Diego campaign.  The First 5 San Diego and Vons partnership embodies Live Well San Diego’s vision to connect organizations of every kind through the shared purpose of building better health in the region.

“Through this partnership, First 5 San Diego and Vons will spread the message of Live Well San Diego and encourage healthier lifestyles throughout San Diego,” said County Supervisor Greg Cox, Chair of the First 5 Commission of San Diego.

The expanded partnership with Live Well San Diego will include the continued distribution of healthy eating information fliers throughout the community to educate and inspire county residents to take action and responsibility for their health.

"We are truly motivated by what the County is doing. Although our business is selling groceries, we care about the community we serve," said Vons Vice President of Retail Operations, Andy Barker.  He went on to describe a wide range of community efforts VONS does, including encouraging its employees to volunteer in many different ways such as rebuilding homes.

Vons will continue to support First 5 San Diego healthy eating contests and promote the healthy eating message in all San Diego Vons and Pavilions stores by displaying First 5 San Diego healthy eating materials.

"Vons maintains the integrity of a general store of old as a place of nourishment not only in terms of food but also a place that cares about the community it serves," said the County’s Health and Human Services Agency Director, Nick Macchione.

First 5 San Diego is excited to join forces to support San Diego County’s long-term initiative to achieve healthy communities and to encourage all residents to make healthy choices at the supermarket, restaurants and home.
