The Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD) joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on April 22, 2015 following a vote by its Board of Trustees. DMUSD became a Live Well San Diego partner by promoting the link between student well-being and learning by providing a comprehensive learning environment that supports student health, physical activity, nutrition, safety and wellness. Students within DMUSD receive many opportunities for physical activity including the annual Kaiser Permanente Carmel Valley 5K & Fun Run, Mileage Clubs, the annual Jog-A-Thon, the Fire Up Your Feet Spring Activity Challenge, and the Jump Rope for Heart Initiative in partnership with the American Red Cross. As a result of these physical activity opportunities, fifth grade students across the District scored within the Healthy Fitness Zone on the 2014 California Physical Fitness Test.
DMUSD also provides students with the opportunity to participate in school sponsored lunch clubs where they can engage in health and wellness activities such as gardening and organized sporting events. To enhance school safety and promote walking and biking to school, DMUSD partners with the San Diego Police Department to sponsor School Safety Patrols and Safe Routes to School. In an effort to promote civic awareness and positive peer relations, DMUSD schools participate in the “Pasta for Pennies” fundraiser to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. They also support the work of the San Diego Food Bank by participating in the annual food drive and have implemented character education programs such as Peace Builders and 8 Keys of Excellence. Moving forward, DMUSD is committed to continuing its successful programs that support both students and families and contribute towards a healthy, safe, and thriving community.
