Escondido Union School District (EUSD) joined Live Well San Diego as a Recognized Partner on October 24, 2013, after a vote by its Board of Education on October 10. EUSD is a Recognized Live Well San Diego Partner because of its innovation and collaboration in developing programs that support the health and safety of its students, staff and community. EUSD provides healthy meals and snacks as well as nutrition education to students through programs such as the Afterschool Education and Safety program, Bringing the Classroom to the Cafeteria program, and the summer meals program called “Summer Feeding,” which provided 22,000 meals to children in Escondido during the summer of 2013. EUSD recognizes the importance of mental health for the academic success of students and provides depression and suicide prevention education to approximately 4,000 sixth- and eighth-grade students every year . Parents are engaged in health and safety training through the Parent University Program and school staff attend regular training on supporting student health and mental health and their own positive health choices through the district’s “Got Health” employee wellness program. Looking forward, EUSD plans to continue many of its widely successful programs and is excited to implement a new Safe Routes to School program.
