The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Choir San Diego (MLKCCSD) joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on June 12, 2016. Founded in 1997, MLKCCSD is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the primary purpose of raising funds for educational grants to San Diego County high school seniors pursuing a college degree in the Visual or Performing Arts. Since its inception the MLKCCSD has provided over 90 grants totaling over $196,000 through its gospel concert performances and other fundraising efforts.
In addition to educational grants, MLKCCSD promotes the artistic growth of children and youth in the metropolitan San Diego region; serves as a cultural ambassador in regional, national, and international concerts and seminars; and promotes arts education through performances while providing the historical context for their repertoire.
MLKCCSD’s longstanding interest and work in the arts, volunteerism, and education throughout the San Diego County area align with the Live Well San Diego vision, specifically under the Thriving component. The Choir promotes positive choices and communication through meaningful volunteer opportunities, youth involvement, promotion of educational advancement, cultural education, and ethnic and spiritual diversity. Volunteer performers and attendees alike experience the rich cultural content and historical significance of the music that is sung by the choir. Performances range throughout the county, across the country, and internationally to locations including the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Denmark and The Netherlands.
This partnership with Live Well San Diego was established through the Choir’s demonstrated leadership in promoting educational attainment and appreciation of the arts. The County of San Diego and its partners are excited to collaborate with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Choir San Diego as they continue serving college-bound students and communities throughout the world as they have for nearly 20 years.
