Spring Valley Youth and Family Coalition joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on June 28, 2016. The mission of the Spring Valley Youth & Family Coalition is to unite community residents, organizations, businesses and social agencies in a representative alliance, connecting the community to provide services and environments that support the health, well-being and resilience of Spring Valley youth and families.
The Spring Valley Youth and Family Coalition began 24 years ago as a community campaign to bring youth programs to Spring Valley. Their first success was the Tween and Teen Center, now known as the REC Club, which opened in 1995 adjacent to the Spring Valley Community Center. Since that first collaborative effort the Spring Valley Youth and Family Coalition has organized or partnered on projects that represent millions of dollars in health and wellness resources for Spring Valley, including a district-wide Healthy Start program supporting school readiness; regional Safe Schools Healthy Students initiatives; capital campaigns to support construction of the Grossmont-Spring Valley Family Health Center and to support construction of the Spring Valley library, gymnasium, and youth center.
The Spring Valley Youth and Family Coalition has partnered with the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District and San Diego Youth Services to transform the former Spring Valley Elementary School into a vital center of community resources and activities. In February 2011, two KaBoom! playgrounds, a fitness path and a teaching garden were built. In addition, a grant from the County of San Diego’s Communities Putting Prevention to Work assisted with the creation of a Regional Garden Education Center (RGEC) for East Region at the site. Thereafter, funding from the San Diego Foundation helped with the first phase of an edible urban food forest aimed at increasing physical activity and improving access to fresh produce for community residents.
Moving forward, Spring Valley Youth and Family Coalition is fully committed to the Live Well San Diego vision and will continue to support healthy, safe and thriving communities.
