SURVIVORS OF TORTURE

Survivors of Torture, International (SURVIVORS) joined Live Well San Diego as a Recognized Partner on April 7th, 2015. Survivors of Torture, International is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for survivors of politically motivated torture and their families who live in San Diego County.

Since 1997, SURVIVORS has helped survivors to recover from their traumas through a holistic program including mental health, psychiatry, social services, and medical case management.

SURVIVORS empowers torture survivors to reclaim the strength and vitality that were stolen from them by brutal dictators and governments. The specialized care SURVIVORS provides these vulnerable individuals helps them to become self-sufficient and healthy members of their families and of our community. Since their inception in 1997, SURVIVORS has served and cared for approximately 1,800 men, women and children who have fled from over 80 different countries where torture is prevalent. Most were tortured because of their ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual identity, political viewpoints or defense of human rights.

SURVIVORS provides critically needed, individually tailored, culturally and linguistically appropriate services which improve physical and mental health, as well as overall emotional well-being so their clients can become active, productive and self-sufficient members of the community. All services are offered free of charge.

SURVIVORS is the only accredited torture treatment organization in San Diego providing specialized care for torture survivors. No other agency in San Diego provides comparable services for this population.

SURVIVORS will continue to advance the Live Well San Diego vision in San Diego County by continuing to help survivors of torture regain a sense of dignity and belonging.
