WILDCOAST became a Live Well San Diego recognized partner on November 7, 2015 during their 12th annual Dempsey Holder Ocean Festival and Surf Contest. WILDCOAST is an international conservation team that conserves coastal and marine ecosystems and wildlife. It has helped preserve more than three million acres of some of the world’s most important sea turtle nesting beaches, gray whale lagoons, coastlines and marine reserves. Its mission is carried out through the establishment and management of marine protected areas, national parks, wildlife refuges, conservation concessions and easements, as well as private land purchase.
WILDCOAST is the lead organization in the conservation of 34,852 acres of open space in San Diego County including eleven marine protected areas, the Otay Valley Regional Park, San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve and Tijuana River Valley Regional Park. Their efforts in San Diego County include community-driven cleanups, restoration, education, human use surveys and protected area management.
WILDCOAST works with partner organizations, elected officials and government agencies to improve the conservation of open public resources in San Diego County and promote equitable access to these areas. WILDCOAST’s partners include the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, San Diego County MPA Community Collaborative, the Tijuana River Estuarine Research Reserve, California State Parks, Fish and Wildlife Services, City of San Diego, Girl Scouts of San Diego, and many more.
