Coronado Unified School District

Coronado Unified School District became a Live Well San Diego recognized partner on Thursday, June 16, 2016.  As a Live Well San Diego recognized partner they will continue their work as an influential school district educating 3,176 students at five schools and extend their commitment to help their students and staff become more healthy, safe and thriving. 

Coronado Unified School District recognizes the link between student health, learning and academic success and has adopted a comprehensive Student Wellness policy to incorporate nutrition education, physical education and ongoing wellness programs at its schools.

Coronado Unified School District addresses health, safety and well-being for its students through compassionate staff, adoption of programs that support a healthy, safe and thriving environment and on-site supportive services including individual and group counseling, peer mediation, crisis management, community outreach and collaboration, substance abuse prevention education, safe routes to school, and access to school resource officers at all school sites.

At Coronado Unified School District:

  • Every school in the District has adopted a Safe and Drug-Free School protocol.
  • The District administers the California Healthy Kids Survey to collect and analyze data related to students’ sense of health and wellbeing, school safety, and behavior, experiences, and attitudes about use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
  • The District has adopted the CHARACTER COUNTS curriculum, centered on basic values called the Six Pillars of Character (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship) encouraging a safer school and community environment.
  • The Food Services Department at the District works to surpass the state and federal standard nutrition requirements, providing salad bars at all schools, while also creating meals and an environment that is attractive to students.
  • The District’s Child Nutrition Program is targeting the reduction of fat, sugar, and salt on the menu to include prohibition of high sugar drinks and carbonated beverages sold on campuses.
  • The District provides outdoor educational opportunities and fresh, organic herbs and vegetables for students and staff.
