The Institute on Violence, Abuse, and Trauma joined as a Live Well San Diego Recognized Partner on August 28, 2017. IVAT was founded in July 2006 with a mission to improve the quality of life for individuals on local, national, and international levels by sharing and disseminating vital information, improving collaborations and networking, conducting research and trainings, providing direct professional services, conducting program evaluations, and consulting to promote violence-free living.
IVAT hosts two international training summits each year, one in San Diego that takes places in the fall, and one in Hawaii that takes place in the spring. Both summits are geared toward a wide variety of professionals, including advocates, educators, and mental health, medical and legal professionals. Each summit has several different tracks that focus on areas such as child maltreatment, intimate partner violence, human trafficking and military trauma. IVAT also hosts local, national and international trainings throughout the year on a wide variety of topics. Within IVAT’s training department, they also offer continuing education units, professional certifications and have a non-profit bookstore.
IVAT provides direct clinical and forensic services locally and nationally. The clinicians within IVAT specialize in providing trauma-focused treatment services to a culturally diverse population. All clinical services are provided on a sliding scale fee schedule to ensure that all individuals in the community have access to appropriate care. IVAT’s clinical staff also provide forensic services to clients within the criminal, civil and family law arenas, including comprehensive psychological and forensic evaluations, neuropsychological evaluations, risk assessments, child custody evaluations, expert witness testimony and consultations.
IVAT supports the Live Well San Diego vision in building better health by providing access to affordable, quality care for victims and survivors of violence, abuse and trauma across the lifespan. IVAT also collaborates with other local organizations to improve access to these services for San Diego residents through consultations, partnerships and trainings. To expand upon these efforts, IVAT plans to provide training and violence prevention program evaluation with local partners and organizations in San Diego and across California. IVAT also works with local organizations to be able to send their employees to one of the training summits at reduced cost to the organization in order to receive the types of trainings that will benefit the organization and the populations that they serve.
