Santee School District joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on October 21, 2014. Santee School District recognizes the direct link between student health and learning and is committed to providing a comprehensive learning environment that supports and promotes wellness for students and staff. Some of these efforts include opportunities for physical activity such as Special Olympics with Kiwanis, monthly mobile recreation opportunities at various school sites and an afterschool program cardio requirement for all students enrolled. In addition to making sure they are doing their part in students’ optimal physical health, Santee School District prohibits advertising of non-nutritious foods and beverages on school grounds and has links to numerous health education sites on their school homepage for parents and students alike. Santee School District is committed to exploring opportunities to educate students and parents about nutrition and is currently in the planning and implementation phase of expanding the number of school gardens at various school sites.
Santee School District is also dedicated to providing substance abuse prevention opportunities for their students. They revised their Board Policy and Administrative Regulations on tobacco to include prohibition of e-cigarettes and hookah pens. The District also wrote and received a collaborative Tobacco Use Prevention and Education grant with Grossmont, Cajon Valley and Lemon Grove School Districts along with the San Diego County Office of Education for the 2014-2017 school years.
This partnership with Live Well San Diego was established through the District’s demonstrated leadership in promoting healthy policies and engaging in a multitude of health service programs. The County of San Diego and its partners are excited to collaborate with Santee School District as they continue to blaze a trail to a better well-being for both their students and their community.
