Sustainable Surplus Exchange joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on February 11, 2016. Since 2011, Sustainable Surplus Exchange has worked with local corporations to redistribute and repurpose their surplus items back into San Diego communities. Similar to Goodwill Industries’ model of repurposing consumer and household items, Sustainable Surplus Exchange works to repurpose business items, including everything from office supplies and furniture to computers and laboratory equipment, essentially anything that has a possibility of reuse. Sustainable Surplus Exchange serves as a community resource for schools, non-profits, start-up companies and military families, enabling them to secure much needed items for free or at a discounted rate.
Through its operations, Sustainable Surplus Exchange is not only helping communities, but the environment as well. At its heart, Sustainable Surplus Exchange is an environmental organization focused on sustainability, conserving natural resources and promoting healthy, socially responsible communities and practices. To date, 424,000 pounds of usable office items have been diverted from local landfills, reducing the carbon footprint of waste in San Diego by 250 metric tons. Sustainable Surplus Exchange also strives to educate the businesses and customers they partner with on how they can practice sustainability within their own organizations moving forward.
Through community engagement, sustainability awareness and conservation of resources, Sustainable Surplus Exchange supports the Live Well San Diego vision of a region that is Building Better Health, Living Safely and Thriving.
