At Black Women Adventures, "living well" means fostering environments where Black women can thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally. As an organization dedicated to health equity and wellness, we believe that true wellness begins with safe spaces for community connection, healing, and empowerment.
A Surprising Fact: Why This Mission Matters
Did you know that, according to the 2022 Exploring Health Disparities in San Diego County by Race and Ethnicity report, the Black population in San Diego makes up only about 5% of the county’s residents? Despite this small percentage, Black individuals face disproportionately high rates of chronic disease, communicable illness, injuries, behavioral health burdens, and maternal and child health challenges.
These alarming disparities often arise from systemic inequities, a lack of culturally competent care, and limited access to preventative wellness resources. Black Women Adventures addresses these challenges head-on with innovative programs that prioritize the health and well-being of Black women. Our work is guided by the belief that when you create a positive impact on a Black woman’s life, you also uplift her family and, ultimately, her entire community. Together, we strive to create lasting change and break the cycles of inequity that have persisted for far too long.
Our Vision in Action: Bringing "Live Well" to Life
Black Women Adventures flagship programs—such as guided hiking retreats, wellness workshops, and community mental health events—are tailored to meet the unique needs of Black women. A recent example is our Grand Canyon Wellness Retreat, which brought together 7 women for a transformative weekend of outdoor exploration, mindfulness, and physical activity. Participants described the retreat as “life-changing,” with 100% reporting reduced stress levels and increased confidence in prioritizing their health.
One participant, Jacqueline T., shared,
“This retreat reminded me how essential self-care is, not just for myself but for my family and community. I left feeling empowered and connected.”
New Non-Profit Committed to Collaboration
At the heart of our mission lies a deep commitment to collaboration, which we believe is key to creating meaningful change. Partnerships with organizations like the California Black Women’s Health Project have been instrumental in helping us expand our reach and impact.
As a newer, volunteer-driven nonprofit, our board, ambassadors, and volunteers bring unmatched passion and dedication to everything we do. We understand that addressing complex challenges requires collective effort—after all, as the saying goes, “It takes a village.”
With this mindset, we are eager to forge new partnerships and strengthen existing ones to amplify our efforts and make an even greater difference in the lives of those we serve.
The Data Speaks: Measurable Success
