Elders are the fastest growing and most vulnerable population in the U.S. They face financial exploitation, neglect, and abuse, but are often targeted due to underreporting. In 2017, there were 45 million elder Americans. The number is projected to reach 73 million by 2030. California's elder population is expected to hit 10.8 million, with San Diego County nearing one million. As cases rise, specialized investigations with distinct legal guidelines are essential. From 2018 to 2022, the Sheriff's Elder Abuse Unit saw a 100% increase in accepted cases.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Elder Abuse and Fraud Unit is dedicated to protecting elderly and dependent adults. In 2024, its four Elder Abuse and four Fraud detectives investigated 419 cases, ranging from physical abuse to sophisticated scams. The Elder Justice Task Force (EJTF), led by the FBI, includes local law enforcement and prosecutors working to dismantle scams targeting seniors. Many originate from overseas call centers, with local money launderers funneling funds abroad. Last year, elder scams resulted in $100 million in reported losses. EJTF partners with organizations like AARP to educate the public and prevent fraud. Together, we are committed to safeguarding our senior community.
