The Power of Showing Up: Debbie’s Tutoring Story

Debbie has been a dedicated Oasis tutor for more than three years, but her passion for helping children goes back much further: she’s been volunteering in schools since the early 1990s. A dietitian by trade and a fantastic communicator skilled in making people feel heard and supported, Debbie has a natural gift for connecting with kids.

Debbie began tutoring with Oasis in the La Mesa School District before also serving at Adams Elementary. Her very first student faced serious health challenges and was hesitant to speak. At first, his only responses to Debbie’s questions were a thumbs up or a thumbs down. One day, as Debbie read aloud, he whispered, “I can read some.” From that moment, they began taking turns reading. His teacher later shared that thanks to Debbie’s patient guidance, this quiet student began raising his hand in class and participating more. He didn’t just need help with reading; he needed someone to see him, encourage him, and remind him that his voice mattered.

San Diego Oasis Kids Reading Books

This past school year, Debbie worked with a 5th grader whose first language wasn’t English. Determined to make their time together special, Debbie chose a book featuring characters who looked similar to her student. Over time, their bond grew, and the student invited Debbie to her 5th grade graduation ceremony, where she proudly delivered a bilingual speech she had written herself. Debbie was overwhelmed with pride, not just for the progress in reading, but for the courage and confidence her student had gained. That student went from English Language Learner to English Language Proficient and even won an award for classroom participation.

When asked what makes Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring so impactful, Debbie didn’t hesitate: “It’s the one-on-one connection. The students don’t have to worry about making a mistake in front of others or being compared. Knowing you made a positive difference in a kid’s life - that’s what it’s all about. At least I was present for them. Showing up is important.”

We are incredibly grateful for tutors like Debbie, who meet each child where they are to nurture their strengths and help them believe in themselves.
