Volunteering is more than just a gesture of kindness; it’s a powerful catalyst for improved health and wellbeing. Engaging in volunteer activities has been linked to reduced stress and depression levels, offering a natural remedy for the challenges of modern life. The act of giving back not only strengthens social connections but also fosters a sense of purpose and fulfillment, boosting self-esteem and overall happiness.
Regional Impacts of Volunteering:
In 2021, more than 5.6 million Californians formally volunteered while contributing $13.5 billion in economic value. Formal volunteering involves helping others through organizations that includes different types of activities that support the community. Live Well San Diego’s Community Involvement Indicator found that about 1 in 4 people (25.5% of the population) in 2019 volunteer an average of 88 hours per year in San Diego County. More recently, the University of San Diego Nonprofit Institute’s 2023 Annual State of Nonprofit and Philanthropy Report shows that in the second quarter of 2023, 46% of San Diego County residents surveyed reported volunteering for a local nonprofit, which is the highest percentage recorded over the past decade.
Individual Impacts of Volunteering:
Volunteering stands out as a unique avenue for skill enhancement and self-discovery. From community projects to international initiatives, the act of volunteering not only makes a positive impact on society but also holds the power to unlock valuable skills. For many, volunteering provides hands-on experiences that traditional education might not offer. Those who lend their time to causes they are passionate about often find themselves delving into areas they hadn't previously explored. Volunteering also serves as a powerful tool for social connections, particularly in an age of increased digital interactions. By working together towards a shared goal, volunteers form meaningful relationships and a sense of camaraderie. These connections not only combat feelings of loneliness but also create a strong support network, promoting a sense of belonging and solidarity within the community.
Volunteering to Make a Difference:
Recently, volunteers Selina Rambo and Angelina Ruiz came together at Camp HLC, a three-day, overnight retreat hosted by Hope Loves Company (HLC) in partnership with ALS San Diego. Camp HLC provides a safe and supportive space for children and young adults, ages 6-21, who have or have had a loved one battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
For both Selina and Angelina, the experience of volunteering was deeply personal. Both of their fathers were diagnosed with ALS and both saw volunteering as a way to maintain their fathers’ legacy.
“Volunteering at Camp HLC was such a meaningful experience,” Selina said. “The kids were incredible—so resilient and kind. It was an honor to be part of a space where they could just be themselves, connect with others who understand their journey, and create joyful memories.”
At Camp HLC, Angelina supported campers in building community, finding respite, and developing healthy coping techniques to draw on while navigating ALS.
“I really enjoyed the art activity at camp,” Angelina shared. “I know that my dad found art very therapeutic while he navigated ALS, and I think it would have made him happy to see the campers benefiting from art like he did. It was a beautiful experience, and I am so glad that I was able to play a role in making this weekend a reality for these families.”
