The Mission Trails Regional Park (MTRP) Foundation recently wrapped up its successful Hit the Trails Hike-a-Thon, raising $45,485 to support the park’s trails, educational programs, and other important park initiatives. The inaugural hike-a-thon was done in partnership with the City of San Diego District 7's Councilmember Raul Campillo and office, along with the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department, Open Space Division.
Over the course of three months, 146 participants hiked a total of 18,460 miles, showcasing the community's commitment to preserving one of San Diego's most beloved natural spaces while improving their health at the same time. Among the top contributors was the BUTLERSTRONG team, which raised $3,751 in memory of their friend, Dr. Kim Butler.
Dr. Butler, a passionate advocate for Mission Trails, was honored with a commemorative table in the park before her passing. The plaque reads, “The best view comes after the hardest climb,” a quote that resonated with the team’s commitment to the park. Team captain Danielle Cherry shared, “We formed BUTLERSTRONG to honor Dr. Butler’s memory. Every year, we hike the 5-Peak Challenge in her honor.”
In addition to their tribute to Dr. Butler, the team appreciates Mission Trails for its diverse trails and abundant wildlife. “We’ve seen deer, coyotes, bobcats, tarantulas, and more!” Danielle said. Their participation in the Hit the Trails Hike-a-Thon not only honored Dr. Butler’s memory, but also helped preserve the park for future generations.
The success of the Hike-a-Thon would not have been possible without the collective efforts of all participants. The MTRP Foundation extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved. The Hit the Trails Hike-a-Thon was more than just a fundraiser; it was an opportunity to unite in support of Mission Trails and ensure its preservation for years to come.
While the Hike-a-Thon officially ended on January 15, 2025, the MTRP Foundation encourages you to explore the vast opportunities offered here at the park. Each week, there are free guided nature walks, family programs, volunteer opportunities, and 65 miles of hiking trails to adventure.
