STAR/PAL (Sports Training, Academics, Recreation/Police Athletic League) continues to make significant strides in empowering underserved youth across San Diego County. By fostering meaningful relationships between law enforcement and young individuals, STAR/PAL is creating a foundation for safer and more connected communities.
This past weekend, STAR/PAL hosted its annual Bike Rodeo—and it was a resounding success. Twenty-three students from the organization’s We Can and Making Changes programs each received a bike and helmet before diving into an engaging, hands-on cycling workshop.
Throughout the day, participants learned the fundamentals of bike safety, from checking equipment and understanding road rules to mastering hand signals and practicing emergency maneuvers. With the help of dedicated instructors and volunteers, the students built not only their bike-handling skills, but also their confidence and independence.
Why does STAR/PAL bring this event to life each year? Because the organization believes every young person deserves to feel safe, empowered, and self-reliant—and that lessons in personal safety and mobility can go hand-in-hand with fun and freedom.
A special shoutout goes to the students who showed up with enthusiasm, tackled the obstacle course with determination, and zig-zagged through those cones like pros. Their spirit and growth are what keep the wheels turning on programs like these.
These programs exemplify STAR/PAL's commitment to nurturing the potential of San Diego's youth by providing them with opportunities for personal growth, mentorship, and positive engagement with law enforcement. Through such initiatives, STAR/PAL continues to contribute to the Live Well San Diego vision, fostering a safer and more thriving community for all.
