GRG CollageIn 2011, the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG) initiative was launched to provide resources and assistance for grandparents and other kinship caregivers raising children on their own. The County of San Diego and its partners work together to expand services and support for children and relatives inside and outside of the formal care system.

A kinship caregiver is someone who is raising a relative or non-relative child, such as a:

  • Grandparent raising a grandchild

  • Aunt or Uncle raising a niece or nephew

  • Older sibling raising a younger sibling

  • Family friend raising a child

  • Can be inside or outside of the foster care system

These caregivers are responsible for the child’s needs, and may be limited in the funds, skills, time, and resources to do so.
